I am not one for New Year’s resolutions. Like, at all. To me, something about them feels too judgey and too devoid of self compassion. To me, they can feel like self bullying.
Personally, I prefer to spend this time in some deeper reflection, uncovering some deserved acknowledgment, and formulating some broader statements about the rising year. More sankalpa than resolution, ya know?
When staring down the transition of an entirely new decade, however…
Thoughts can get really broad!
The past decade has seen the lion’s share of my larger life commitments. It has supported, challenged, and simultaneously allowed each of them to thrive and grow into their new chapters.
I am so very thankful for all of it – bumps and all!
I’m thankful for my job teaching (and learning from!) first and second graders – 17 years and counting.
I’m thankful for my husband and how we’ve shaped our love and our lives together – 18 years and counting.
I’m thankful for the roof over my head and the memories which it contains – 12 years and counting.
I’m thankful for my yoga community and the encouragement and support they’ve selflessly offered me – 6 years and counting.
I’m thankful for the years of lessons that I’ve learned about making mistakes, communicating with myself and others, trusting in my own capacity, and witnessing others rising to their best selves – 40 years and counting.
Last year’s New Year’s mantra that I kept returning to in my yoga practice was “I am enough.” It’s looking like my words for 2020 are shaping up to be “I am here.”
I am here, my eyes are open, and I’m ready. Let’s do this.
Here’s to the next decade of reflection and growth. Thanks for being here with me. We’ve got this.
Happy New Year. Happy New Decade. Happy 2020.
❤️

I gave up resolutions after realizing I had the same ones year after year. But choosing a word for the year is a wonderful practice. Still ruminating about mine.

I’ve never been one for new year’s resolutions either. I do like your reflection list though. I am inspired to do one of my own soon. Thank you.
