5-4-3-2-1 (Day 15/31 #sol20)

Wowzas, is information moving quickly out there these days. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on what is (and what isn’t!) real, it’s all thrown up into the whirlwind again. I don’t even know what’s going to be The New Normal tomorrow, let alone what’s going to happen after Spring Break. That’s weeks away. That’s, like, totally fiction land at this point.

I saw an Instagram post from Elizabeth Gilbert this morning. Love her. She shared the 5-4-3-2-1 method of staying grounded when things get too hectic or swirly. I had heard of this method before, I even once had a printout on the wall of my classroom, and (typical) I’d forgotten all about it. But any extra tricks to stay grounded these days are welcome in my book, so I wanted to share it with you.

Here’s how to anchor yourself in the here and now using the 5-4-3-2-1 method…

Take a moment and check out your current surroundings.

Name 5 things that you can see.

Name 4 things that you can hear.

Name 3 things that you can feel.

Name 2 things that you can smell.

Name 1 thing that you can taste.

That’s it! You’ve done it. You’ve managed to ground yourself in the present moment where, as it turns out, is really the only place you can actively find peace.

  2. My friend taught me this awhile ago – thank you for bringing it to my memory! Another one I love is focusing on each part of your body individually (feel your feet on the ground, feel shoulders as they relax, etc.)
