B is for Brilliant – we hold a high Bar.
C is for Coughs, ‘Cause they’re always so sick.
D is for Dozens of books – their book boxes are THICK.
E is for Each and Every hug that I get.
F is for Farts – better hope they’re not wet.
G is for Germs that make us stay home in bed.
H is for Hand sanitizer. Can’t they just bathe in it, instead?
I is for Interests – boy, these kids sure have lots.
J is for Joy, which fuels most of their thoughts.
K is for Kristina, of course! Not a Koala or a Kangaroo.
L is for Laugh, which we all Love to do.
M is for our March Madness class book bracket to come.
N is for NOT stopping writing, even after work time is done.
O is for OH MY GOD DID I JUST HEAR WHAT I THINK THAT I HEARD?!
P is for Post-its, which capture every naughty word.
Q is for Quiet – a magical notion, nonexistent at lunch.
R is for Reading, which they love a whole bunch.
S is for Secret Stories, my phonics Skeleton key.
T is for Terrific, as their spelling is growing to be.
U is for Uncertainty as to why that shoelace is soggy.
V is for my brain being Very, VERY foggy.
W is for Wonder and Wisdom and Wit.
X is rarely represented properly on an alphabet picture chart, so maybe go fiX it.
Y is for You, I’m so grateful You’re here.
Z is for Moose…
(Wait, no, that’s the title of a favorite book. Let me try again.)
Z is for kaZillion, which is the number of years that I would probably teach at my special magical school but since that sounds like a Zany and Zippy number, I’ll celebrate my twenty-one years with great cheer.

They’re trying to build a ramp so they can get a running start, scamper up the tree, and retrieve the yo-yo that they’d thrown up there about 7 minutes before the picture was taken. All of which have zero percent of actually working because the yo-yo was WAY up at the top of the tree.

And the award goes to YOU! How delightfully clever and thoughtful was this literary celebration! Having taught 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders and (having) worked at a preschool (that had 6 weeks to 4 yrs old) in my life (not to mention having four boys that range in age from 7-18), I TOTALLY get these jokes!
I don’t think I’ve laughed this much while reading a poem since I first encountered Shel Silversteins, “A Light in the Attic.” I’m almost embarrassed to say, that among the funniest parts to me were the grossest ones, LOL! I can’t help it – again, #boymom here! But the soggy shoelaces, farting, sanitizer bathing, germs and the like are just unconventionally fun, and you are a genius. Extra kudos for so innovatively addressing each letter of the alphabet while avoiding the expected!
Thanks so much for sharing these sentiments. God bless you, with 33 students – yeesh, that’s a lotta little people, LOL! I don’t know how you do it, except that you must have superhero strength – and clearly, a superhero heart. Those students are so fortunate to have you. Your creativity and enthusiasm leap off of this page.
