Check your batteries! (#sol24 Day 26/31)

I woke up to a 49°F house this morning.

Don’t get me wrong, I would much rather prefer to be too cold than too hot, I sleep with my windows cracked open all year round, and I am always equipped with cozy hats and layers but 49° was a chilly entrance to this Tuesday. Plus, I’m housesitting and have no idea about the ins and outs of their heating system.

Let’s see…

Check the temp to see what I’m dealing with but… The electric thingy on the wall? Blank. No numbers. Maybe that heavy snow knocked something out of whack that I don’t know about?

Hmmm. Might as well grab my winter hat and my jacket. Time to get cozy.

There’s a wood stove in the living room, do I remember how to start a fire?

Of course I do! I didn’t grow up in Vermont for nothing.

Okay. Now that the fire’s going and I’m feeling pretty proud of my self-providing self, let’s check in with the house owners.

One quick FaceTime later, a nice big stash of found new batteries, some successful wrenching off of a faceplate, and I’ve done it. As soon as the faceplate snaps back on, the telltale whir and clicks of the blower start up. Back in business!

I curl up by the fire anyways, not willing to exit that circle of woodsy warmth.

Wild that something as small as a AAA battery can make a house-wide impact.

I’m sure there’s some deeper messages in here about quick fixes having big results, about changing our own batteries ahead of total burnout, or even about the full moon’s impact on heavy spring snowstorms on Tuesdays in the Rockies but I’m honestly just relieved that nothing went super wrong on my watch and I could go back to reading my book and drinking my coffee on my own chill (heh!) timeline.

Ugh. Okay. Fine. My brain needs me to wrap it all up together so here it is:

Gotta check those damn batteries so you don’t get frozen out of your next morning.

🙄🤭

Actually made it out for a walk on this moody Colorado Tuesday afternoon.
