Alternate Universe Monday? (#sol23 Day 6/31)

Boy, oh boy, was today one of those Mondays.

You know the kind.

The kind of Monday at school where you have to pause and make eye contact with other sane adults from time to time just to confirm that you are, indeed, still on the same planet and in the same reality with your regularly scheduled bunch of six- and seven-year olds.

Like when…

  • A second grader sidles by you at snack and happily tells you to, “enjoy the cinnamon rolls!” when you are, in fact, eating nothing that even resembles a cinnamon roll (or, for that matter, ANY other type of pastry).
  • A first grader thrusts a book right in your face holds out a reading group book, looking at you wide-eyed and expectedly, when he’s absolutely supposed to be back reading at his spot. You say, “yes?” and he just stares at you while holding out the book. “What would you like me to do with that book?” you ask. He hasn’t yet blinked and he says, “I have this book.” “Yes, you sure do. Think you’re ready to read it?” More stares. And then off he goes to sit down and read at his spot. Note: No blinks occurred during the entirety of this non-transaction of information.

I mean…

Those are just two tiny examples from what proved to be one of those days that strengthened my resolve in the belief that there are thin boundaries between worlds.

Not sure who was in our classroom today. They were masquerading as first and second graders and trying out their hand at our reality but I think they were actually just short aliens. Every single one of them. 33 aliens on this Earth today.

Maybe you saw some, too?

  1. I love the humor you bring to this piece. So many wonderful craft moves that made me laugh! The ending especially: “They were masquerading as first and second graders and trying out their hand at our reality but I think they were actually just short aliens. Every single one of them. 33 aliens on this Earth today. “–so fun!

  2. I am totally charmed by the idea of unskilled short aliens trying to “pass” in your classroom! Hope this image helped you make it through the day!
You crafted this piece so well, such a pleasure to read it.

  3. YES to this sentiment- “thin boundaries between worlds”… your kiddos gave me a solid chuckle, especially the cinnamon bun comment. Your comic timing is on point as usual. I also really liked how you did strike through text to drive home the point.
